In 2015, I found myself in a heavy and dark place. Despite feeling something was off, it took a while before I sought help from a professional for my generalized anxiety and depression. However, I eventually took that step, and it proved to be a game-changer. #mentalhealth #wellness

Medication changed the course of my journey for the better.

After being prescribed a low dose of medication for six months, and then a lower dosage for another six months, I began to channel my energy into more positive outlets, such as my creativity, hobbies, and journal writing.

Letting go was difficult.

Learning to let go of unhealthy people, jobs, and toxic societal rhetoric was a necessary step in my healing process. I also learned that society's pressure to be the "best" mother, partner, friend, or worker was toxic and unhelpful. By letting go of these expectations, I was able to focus on what truly mattered in my life. Although it seemed lonely at times, this action was crucial in building a strong foundation for my mental health.

Keeping my sense of humor was therapeutic.

I discovered the importance of humor, and how it could bring much-needed relief during difficult times. Additionally, I leaned on my family and friends for comedic therapy and sought individual counseling sessions.

I made it a point to check in with myself twice a year.

Ultimately, my journey was about finding the right balance, and creating a support system that worked for me. Through it all, I learned to prioritize my mental health, and that sometimes, being alone was the best thing for me.

How I stay on track with my mental health today?

Today, I am grateful for the valuable lessons I learned during that challenging time, and I am dedicated to helping others discover their own path towards healing and self-improvement. In that spirit, here are a few tips that I use to help support myself along the way.

Self-Care Tip: Every day, I make it a priority to dedicate time for myself first. This can involve activities such as writing, journaling, spending time alone, listening to an inspiring podcast or video, or working on my own business ideas before attending to other obligations such as freelance projects or other tasks. #selfcare

Support Tip: I make it a priority to find a local counselor who is easily accessible and schedule talk therapy sessions with them at least twice a month. This ensures that I have a professional to turn to for support and to gain new insights on challenges I may be facing in my life before they become overwhelming.

Social Tip: To prevent myself from becoming too isolated at home, I make an effort to plan short trips or spend time in inspiring places around town. Even brief changes of scenery can be beneficial for mental wellbeing, so I prioritize incorporating travel and new experiences into my routine.

Final Thoughts.

When it comes to mental health, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Each person's journey is unique, and there are a variety of tools and resources available to support individuals in their quest for wellness. For some, medication may be a helpful part of the equation. For others, counseling and therapy may be the key to finding healing and self-discovery. And for all of us, creating our own mental health check-in routine can be a powerful way to prioritize our wellbeing and stay on track with our goals. By being intentional about our mental health and seeking out the support we need, we can all take steps towards a more fulfilling and balanced life.

So, let's continue to raise awareness about mental health, break down stigmas, and support each other in our journeys towards wellness.
